Standard equipment
From KayakWiki
The minimum equipment you need to go kayaking is a kayak and a paddle. Beyond that best practice includes a spray skirt, PFD and Helmet. With this minimum of equipment and a little good judgement you can have a safe and fun day out on the water. Other equipment depends on the type of kayaking you are doing.
If you are venturing farther off shore it is wise to wear immersion clothing and bring safety gear. Even if you are not planning on traveling long distances, navigation equipment is recommended. If you are traveling in a group it is a good idea for at least one member of the group to carry rescue equipment. For overnight camping trips you will of course want camping equipment.
It is also worthwhile to consider taking a camera and or notepad/log to record details about the trip while still fresh.
