Smooth

From KayakWiki

The surface of the wood, below the first layer of epoxy and fiberglass needs to be smooth enough so that bubbles do not form under the fiberglass. Holes filled, surfaces fair, no step-offs. The surface of the wood does not need to be sanded with progressively finer sandpaper, but the surface should have no holes. It is much easier to sand wood than to sand epoxy.
