Smoke signal

Marine supply stores and some kayak shops will sell smoke signals. They are small cans that, when opened, release a large plume of smoke - bright orange in colour - to attract attention.

If you are going to build a fire to attract attention, make three small fires. Three of anything will be interpreted as a mayday signal. Once the fires are burning well, put damp leaves or other material to make them smoke.
