I used 1/4" by 1 1/2" red oak and white oak, but they were excessively wide. 1/4" bent well, I had some splitting due to grain runout. Shawn Baker

Grain runout is most critical. Saw your rib blanks so the face is perfectly parallel to the grain of the board. Using an axe to split the board lengthwise will reveal the grain's exact orientation. Cut the board with the rough edge against the fence. Shawn Baker
