A radio transmission on a specific frequency.

A signal source can be located by triangulation, where several receivers can determine the approximate distance to the signal by measuring the strength of the signal. The direction to a signal source can also be determined with a directional antenna - the signal is strongest when the antenna is pointed directly at the source of the signal.
