Risk

From KayakWiki

Apparent risk tends to be subjective. While some people think it is no big dealing to go surfing after a hurricane, others are intimidated when in water more than ankle deep. However, there are obvious differences between the relative safety of the two activities. But just because one activity may be more dangerous than another does not mean it is insanity to engage in the more dangerous activity. We engage in risky activity every day, from driving a car to eating someone elses cooking.

Kayaking qualifies as a risky activity. The consequences of a mistake can be catastrophic, ranging from swimming to hypothermia and drowning. The way to mitigate the risk is following best practices and using good judgement, and be careful of risk homeostasis.
