Riffle

A rocky shoal or sandbar lying just below the surface of moving waterway. Also, a stretch of choppy water caused by such a shoal or sandbar, usually a dimminutive form for rapid.

In Ohio, riffles are class I and II whitewater, and rapids are anything more.
