From KayakWiki

The reverse sweep is a type of kayaking stroke. Like other sweep strokes, it is used to turn the kayak.

[edit] How to do a reverse sweep

The reverse sweep is pretty much the same as the forward sweep. Start wound up as if you just finished a foward sweep. Use the back-face of the paddle and sweep out far from the boat. Once again, when the twisting motion in your torso and hips ends, finish the stroke by pulling the paddle up to your bow with your arms. A lean is also important on this stroke to get the most from the turning motion.
