Red hot knife

From KayakWiki

For cutting various synthetic cloths, one of the best tools is the hot knife.

The advantage of cutting with a hot knife is the melting and sealing of the cut edge so no threads unravel.

A simple way to do this is to obtain an inexpensive steak knife or paring knife from a grocery store. Make sure the knife has a wood handle instead of a plastic handle. Using a propane torch, heat the knife blade about an inch from its point until the metal glows cherry red. Heated such, the knife will cut about 2 feet of cloth like butter, before it needs to be re-heated. Obviously, care should be taken not to get burned by the torch, knife, or melted cloth edges.

If you want an electric hot knife, look at craft and hobby stores. They sell hot knives that are basically an X-acto-knife-like blade in a soldering pencil or gun. You can also get knife blade parts for some soldering tools at a hardware store.
