Pry
From KayakWiki
Dynamic Pry - A stroke where the paddler pushes the blade away from the kayak, This moves the kayak in a direction away from the paddle.
Static Pry - A stroke where the paddler holds the blade in a fixed position and water flow over the blade results in the kayak being pushed away from the side on which the paddle is held.
In canoeing, a pry usually involves levering the paddle off of the gunwale to increase the power of the stroke. Kayaks have such low gunnels that this is impractical. A pry stroke is often used in canoeing to move the canoe sideways (as opposed to a draw). However, such pry strokes are much less efficient in kayaks and are not usually used. However, a sculling pry is a neat trick and isn't something many paddlers can do.
