Paint
From KayakWiki
There are many types of paint that are useful for kayaks and kayak gear.
- Skin on frame kayaks can be painted with oil-based house paints.
- Strip built and stitch and glue kayaks usually use a clear varnish, but some are painted with oil-based paints. Epoxy paints can also be used.
- Composite kayaks are usually covered with gelcoat or a clear coat. You can use a good quality paint instead of gelcoat or to cover an ugly gelcoat colour. Epoxy paints are particularly well suited.
- House paints include exterior wall paints, floor paints and porch paints. Only oil-based paints will stand up to the water.
- Epoxy paints are two-part formulations that are quite tough and long lasting. Formulations specifically for marine applications are available from marine suppliers.
