Nautical term

Why is it that we boaters are always calling something which has a perfectly obvious name, something else??
To help you get into the swing of things, here are a few translations from Nautical to common English:

| ship | a large vessel |
| boat | what you get into when the ship sinks |
| bow | front |
| stern | back |
| fore | toward the front |
| aft | toward the back of the vessel |
| stern | the back of the vessel |
| transom | the very back of the vessel! |
| port | on the left looking forward |
| starboard | on the right looking forward |
| keel | bottom centerline of the boat |
| deck | top of boat |
| hull | what's between you and the water |
| hullabaloo | what's heard when the hull is not between you and the water |
| coaming | any raised lip on the deck to shed water |
| planning | what you do before paddling |
| planing | what you do before fiberglassing (or down the front surface of a wave while surfing) |
| capsize | become upside down (has nothing to do with the size of one's head) |
| run | move quickly through the water |
| beat | to move upwind (also how you feel when you have moved upwind) |
| PFD | life jacket |
| dry bag | plastic bag which keeps its contents wet |
