Why is it that we boaters are always calling something which has a perfectly obvious name, something else??

To help you get into the swing of things, here are a few translations from Nautical to common English:

Terminology, i.e. Boat Speak
Nautical English
chart map
ship a large vessel
boat what you get into when the ship sinks
bow front
stern back
fore toward the front
aft toward the back of the vessel
stern the back of the vessel
transom the very back of the vessel!
port on the left looking forward
starboard on the right looking forward
keel bottom centerline of the boat
deck top of boat
hull what's between you and the water
hullabaloo what's heard when the hull is not between you and the water
coaming any raised lip on the deck to shed water
planning what you do before paddling
planing what you do before fiberglassing (or down the front surface of a wave while surfing)
capsize become upside down (has nothing to do with the size of one's head)
run move quickly through the water
beat to move upwind (also how you feel when you have moved upwind)
PFD life jacket
dry bag plastic bag which keeps its contents wet
