Minicel
From KayakWiki
MinicelĀ® is a closed cell foam often used in kayak construction. Its primary uses are for
- the bulkheads which separate a sea kayak's cockpit from its waterproof storage/floation compartments and
- the material of custom seats
- padding for thigh hooks and hips
MinicelĀ® cuts very nicely with a band saw, can be cut with a kitchen knife, can be sanded with a ROS, or be sanded (takes a while) by hand. There is a product, called dragonskin, that is specifically for shaping minicel. It can be found at many kayak shops that sell minicel outfitting materials.
It can be glued with epoxy, contact cement, and marine adhesives.
It is much more expensive than open cell foams, is often only available by mail order, and costs an arm and a leg to ship in large pieces.
