Linking policy

From KayakWiki

Creating a link to an external web site is perfectly acceptable in most circumstances. It is better to link to an external, reliable source than to reinvent the wheel, as it were, with a page you write yourself on this wiki. As well, it makes sense to create links to commercial sources to give readers useful information.

The only restrictions will be as follows:

  • A commercial operator or web page owner should not create a page or add a link for the sole purpose of advertizing. It is acceptable to create a link to your web site and modify a web page with brief information about your products if it is done in a purely informational manner. No bragging, puff pieces or dissing of competitors will be permitted. Under no circumstance should an independent review be modified because you don't like what it says. You can change it to correct factual errors (preferably as an addendum) but every person presenting a review is entitled to their opinion. Commercial operators cannot write a review of their own products.
  • Links to web sites that do not pertain specifically to the topic of the page are forbidden.
  • Links to manufacturer's product information are preferred to links to sales web sites. Exceptions that are acceptable are for vendor's sites where the vendor provides significant information that is of value to a typical kayaker.
  • Links to a web site for a book, video or other similar product that is of specific interest to kayakers and is only available from the producer of the document are acceptable. This means specifically that those who self-publish a work and do not have a distribution network may identify where a kayaker may obtain the product.

Persons or companies that violate these policies can have their access to Kayakwiki revoked.
