Edging

From KayakWiki

The technique of Edging involves tilting one's kayak sideways while maintaining an upright line of centre of gravity. Unlike leaning, one's body is kept as upright as possible. Edging is done simply by lifting a knee on the side you want to go up and shifting body weight into the other side of one's butt. For example, edging to your right would involve lifting your left knee and shifting your body weight to the right cheek of your butt.

Proper foothold on the footrests help one to edge better when combining edging with recovery techniques like the high brace and low brace.

Edging facilitates greatly in turning one's kayak. It allows you to lift the keel out of the water somewhat and reduce the tendency to track. Whitewater and sea kayak paddlers edge differently to turn - see Forward sweep for details.
