Directional stability

From KayakWiki

Directional Stability is the tendency of a hull to maintain a straight path when in motion. One that tends to turn is not directionally stable. Sometimes referred to as longitudinal stability.

The following factors tend to increase directional stability:

  • A long keel line
  • A deep Vee keel
  • Fine ends
  • Skegs or rudders

Increasing the rocker tends to reduce longitudinal stability.
