There are several design software packages available for designing kayaks and other vessels.

The desirable traits for a computer aided design (CAD) program for kayak building include:

• ease of entering a design
• analysis of design is complete
  • Wetted surface
  • surface area
  • displacement at design waterline
  • center of gravity with simulated paddler
  • waterline length
  • cross section at stations
    • offsets for each station
    • method of printing cross sections full size for building
  • views of the kayak
    • side elevation
    • front elevation
    • plan
    • at an angle with simulated colored skin on water
