Places : US : Maine : Carey Brook

Category : Whitewater river

Grade : Class II-III

Where? : Kennebec River, The Forks, Maine

Put in : Carey Brook

Approx length : 10 miles

Access rights : This is an emergency access point for the Kennebec River. There is a parking area.

Major hazards : Strainers and some minor holes. Rocks as the water level goes down.

Description : This section of the Kennebec can be run at any water level but for a faster run make sure you are in the water by 10:30am as that is when the water from the dam release has passed Carey Brook. There is a gravel road leading off the main railroad bed road to Harris Station; it has a red cross sign next to it. Follow the river to the parking lot and then get your gear and climb down at least 100, slippery, wooden steps to the river. There is a confluence here of the Kennebec and a small stream coming in from river left and the water from the stream is very cold. There are a few good wave trains and play spots over the 10 miles to the ballfield at The Forks and it's great practice for beginners (especially the upstream ferrying and eddy jumping).
