Care of fabrics
From KayakWiki
Modern fabrics used in clothing do not require special treatment however, they should not be laundered like natural fabrics. In particular:
- Do not use fabric softeners on technical fabrics. Synthetics used in fleece, wicking polyesters and similar fabrics are treated to enhance their ability to wick and to provide them with anti-microbial properties. Anti-microbial coatings help keep your clothes from stinking when worn. Using fabric softeners coats the fabrics and prevents these treatments from working.
- Avoid machine drying fleeces and many synthetics. Fleeces will pill if machine dried, as will some wicking fibers in other fabrics. Hanging them to dry will minimize pilling and keep the fabrics soft.
- Waterproof breathables like Gore-Tex™ only work well when clean. The DWR in the face fabrics will remain effective if they are clean and are revived with heat. Follow the manufacturers instructions.
