Canted

From KayakWiki

Canted: at an angle to vertical or horizontal.

  • Greenland paddles are often used with a canted stroke - the blade is angled, top edge forward, relative to the water surface. The paddle enters the water being drawn aft so that the flow of the water over the blade generates lift. In the first phase of the stroke, this lift generates a significant forward force to propel the kayak.
  • A mast can also be canted if it is stayed at an angle to forward. Canted masts have little benefit over vertical ones, but can look fast - hence their popularity during the 19th century on racing yachts.
