All-in rescue

From KayakWiki

A rescue performed by multiple capsized paddlers. There are various methods to perform this rescue. As many as possible should be employed.

  • If close to to each other, raft two kayaks together and have one paddler launch himself over the kayaks, using the pair for stability. Then enter one of the kayaks. No paddle floats or paddles are required, since the second kayak is used for stability. Once in, the seated paddler can assist the other.
  • Capsized paddlers perform self rescues.
  • Capsized paddlers raft up and perform the T rescue over one another's inverted hulls.
  • A couple of strong paddlers perform fast self rescues like the re-enter and roll, cowboy scramble, or outrigger rescues and then paddle up to other capsized paddlers to perform normal assisted rescues.

This is an important rescue to practice. While it seems unlikely to some, under serious conditions, having all members of a small group capsize in the same area is not that unusual. Even two paddlers can use the techniques of All-in to help each other.
